Description

Spark Flashlight is a simple, no-fluff, freeware, advertisement-free flashlight my business is developing for Android and Windows Phone. You can read about why we're doing it in my Newsfeed: hivemindtech.x10.mx/hivenet/mu…

Market Analysis

A handful of extra features can be nice (Such as strobe blinking and SOS-Mode), but the way they’re implemented is generally cumbersome and cluttering. A lot of apps also have a very subtle torch design – this is nice, but design-wise it can add unnecessary fluff. Additionally, a majority of torch apps are badly designed and have UI elements that don’t scale up/down very well (Example, tablets and larger screens, such as that on Phablets) – that, and on higher DPI screens (Such as the Google Nexus 5′s 445DPI/1080P screen), elements can look really blurry.

Another issue to point out is bright interfaces – when one is using their phone as a flashlight, the last thing a user needs is a glaring bright screen shining up at them. Dark ‘torch’ designs work well, but there’s still plenty of light leakage. Our app would ideally black out the entire screen bar a small on/off button (which would be illuminated to indicate it’s on/where to click to turn off)

Our solution?

We’re going to develop a torch app that not only looks and runs well, but also functions as one would expect, launches quickly, and looks premium-grade. It should have:

  • A simple user interface design, with a discreet system for showing advanced options.
  • High-definition elements that scale up & down beautifully – is .svg or a vector possible?
  • A user interface that, when the phone’s LED is on, makes the screen dark.
  • Hardly any permission requirements (or none at all) – a torch should be just that, a torch.
  • Amazing performance – do people want the torch to auto-on when the app is launched?
  • A darkened screen when on – I for one hate being flashed in the face with a bright screen while using a torch app.
  • Most importantly it must be absolutely free.

This app, as with all our innovations, should comply with Dieter Rams’ 10 principles for good design. I will keep everyone updated with any design or programming progress (But our priority is the STUDYvault at the moment!)

Make sure you post back when the app is ready and I will do an honest review on android.
